what I build

You also wanted to know about something I build…. pls have a look at handle of globe. I still have to work out how to get the video on it…

This is the idea for my project.

I think I will have a go at the poem you suggested. My idea initially is to create a sort of tunnel and something appears when you approach it. When you enter it ( and it could also be transparent walls with different textures) it will turn night time. So you will see stars and a moon etc. I intend to let the avatar float thru the tunnel so I have some form of control of the avatar. There could be a star and when the avatar touches it it “explodes”. There will also be a mirror and when the avatar looks into it the avatar sees a very old person. Still have to think of the stone part and find out more about the content of the poem. These are just ideas at present popping out of my head. Since I am mainly interested in video I will also try and incorporate a video . For e.g. when the avatar walsk thru one of the transparent walls ( which represent the dream) and looks back there will be on the back of the wall a video running. Somehow a black and white one so to represent time and old …

Sounds very ambitious to me but so what.

I see all sorts of different shapes. Oval, triangle, boxes, stairs, walls and picture frames on them. In generall they do look “flat” in most cases. For e.g. people walking on the floor you can clearly “see” they are actually not on the floor. However the main dome for e.g. as the changing room looks interesting with the paua background, then frames or different shapes between the pictures of different assecories.

When you are in the “catwalk” situation the “depth” of the room is actually quite nice. You have people on the chairs and they look towards the catwalk. Depth is achieved by different textures, size of objects and the impression you are looking “into” a room. I guess that is the 3D part.

The eyes of the avatars are really amazing and “life” the faces are a bit too “designed”.

Nature is designed quite nice with trees, fern, grass which all looks quite realistic.

The staircase is created with different colours and textures to add depth. When looking into the distance you see nature and pathways which have again different shapes and depth. The sky is not really transparent. It looks like a water colour painting and could have a bit more texture to it I think.

Textures: colours, material like wood, steel, brick, water

interaction and scripting:

Hi Isa,
I am at the Stairway of learning. Initially the avatar has to read the first sign which is not interactive to get instructions as to how the staircase works. Then you approach the first platform and you have two things happening: 1 a board again with helpful hints of information, short sharp and sweet. 2 a green box “flying” on top of the board and that one is intercative. When you click on it is gives you two choices: to either save a notecard with more information into your inventory or to open a link to a website with more information.
AND… scripting wise… there probaply needs to be a code for “hover” over box as the hand appears only then, which indicates I can click on it and it is interactive. The second code then should follow once you clicked on the object have 2 options…
more to follow.

  2. The Hyperdom console works I think just with “clicking” commands. Nothing happens when you “hover” over the buttons.
But when you click on a button the scenario in the room behind is changing according to your desired button/command. So I guess it is a simple: when clicking on buttomn”Interviewroom” create interview room with table chair to sit on etc…

  5. You can only drop off a notecard when you have permission to do so by your lecturer. I found several notebox which were not named and when you click on them nothing happens. However when you click on the help box you receive a notecard explaing you what you need to do.

I guess that is it for my assessment of the SLENZ. I am not too sure about what to write about the scripts itself since I don’t know how to script yet.

Cheers

SLENZ

Hi Claire,

when we did the exercise in class 2 weeks ago I did respond directly to Isas blog and you should be able to read my comments there.

However I will go into more detail since you asked for it.

B log compiler/writer: John Waugh (SL: Johnnie Wendt) An award-winning journalist in real life, John has “lived” in Second Life and other virtual worlds as “Johnnie Wendt” and other avatars for some three years

Joint Project Leader: Terry Neal (SL Tere Tinkle) – Terry is an experienced project manager who managed collaborative e-learning projects for institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs) for four years before establishing the consultancy, Blended Solutions, in August, 2007.

Joint Project Leader: Dr Clare Atkins (SL: Arwenna Stardust) –  Clare is Research Leader and a Senior Lecturer in IT at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and has been a Second Life resident since November 2006.  Currently responsible for the development of NMIT’s presence in Second Life with the islands of Koru and Kowhai, Clare has a strong conviction that the use of multi-user virtual environments will have lasting changes on tertiary education.

Lead developer: Aaron Griffiths (SL: Isa Goodman) – Aaron is a virtual world developer, specialising in interactive educational content designer, interactive content development, courseware design, learning technologies, VR development, educational programming. Director, F/Xual Education Services: https://eduforge.org/projects/slcampusnz/

and a few more…

by the looks quite a few people who you would not nessecarily imagine to find here. Lots of “brainies” at least from their titles and obviously a wide community sees the potential for education via this environment.

What do I think: well since our children are almost internet wired when they are born there is a lot of potential in using this tool for education. It might actually exite boys a lot more than girls to start some school work, if it is “looking” like a game or a playstation tool. I think however that I would not use it for young children since I believe that kids need to interact with nature and touch and feel and experience the “real world” to start with and later use this as a tool once they are “connected” with something living. I see that the internet is another tool to make us humans feel seperate from each other and we are not interacting direct anymore. Yes sure it has advantages, I don’t need to show someone that I am vulnerable as I create my avatar as that strong, amazing, beautiful, successful , sexy… have I forgotten something? “person” and no one can touch me ( literally).

However used wisely I can see it being fun and appropriate for older age groups. By the way I do believe that we as a human race will figure out how to teleport in real life! Looking forward to that.

Now to the build of the SLENZ area.

Interesting… I don’t seem to find it anymore or it looks totally different now. Have to ask you for help Claire later.

I thought it was  on Koru 139,104,26….

I wanted to answer the question in regards to shape and types of prims but will try to do that later when I have found it again.

idea for interaction

Hi Aaron,

I had a brief look at the laboratory today and the only thing I managed was to hop in a gondola and go for a ride. If I would create an interaction I would want to make sure that the “downloading” spcae and time is minimal as it is really frustrating if you don’t move or crash all the time.

I would like to create a globe kind of shape which is constantly flying around in space. Which space I mean in a special location but flying. I then would like this globe to be able to scan avatars within a radius of (don’t know whats appropriate) cm or meters ? and if an avatar is touching the scan video images appear on the globe. Like either a video running within the globe or still images running as a slideshow underlined with text. It would be cool if sound could be incorporated.

The globe itself is rotating and flying and propably should have some kind of code saying “fly only in unoccupied places”. So there wouldn’t be any collissions.

I am not sure if it would be easier to screen the video/slideshow within the globe when it is scanned or if when scanned a videoscreen comes up and runs the video . I guess I also need to determine how long I want the video to run before it stops and also if I want the globe to rotate on the spot for that period of time.  I get the feeling the code gets quite complicated but I guess you are helping with this?

What I do is to log on later tonight to see if my system is still crashing all the time. Then I try tomorrow and if it persists I have to work from nmit.

Please do let me know if you received this and if this is kind of what you are looking for. Thanks!

Hi Isa and Claire,

this is my first blog entry and relates to the SLENZ build assignment. Here we go:

description of the build:

my net work is so slow I can’t see anything. I will do this from school or another night.
